Keisling and Mottet will lead a discussion centering on policy briefing, followed by a question-and-answer session. “This is an important event for trans folks and allies to attend because it’s an exceptional chance to learn more about what the national landscape looks like for trans justice, as well as the local one,” explained Tash Shatz, trans jus tice and youth organizer for BRO and orga nizer for Washington County’s Pride Project. “Specifically, I think many folks in trans communities aren’t deeply connected to na tional leadership and they have a lot o f impor tant questions about what’s going on across the country,” said Shatz. “This event is an op portunity to answer some of those questions and to connect to the amazing trans justice work that’s being done locally.” Portland groups such as Collective o f G e niuses, Q_Center and Trans Fern* will also be on hand to speak about the work they are do ing and to let attendees know how to get involved. This event includes a noon lunch followed by a speaker panel at 1 p.m. featuring Dr. Suzanne Scopes, Jose Miguel and Solomon Greenblatt, moderated by Zan Gibbs. standing achievements. “I was very surprised and really proud to learn I had been selected,” said Allen. “I feel especially honored because it was my peers who decided that I belong in the top five per cent of our state’s attorneys.” Allen’s commitment to educating others of the legal struggles facing the L G B T commu nity doesn’t stop at the end o f the workday. She has participated in numerous seminars and speaking engagements for Oregon lawyers and the L G B T community in 2010, unpaid endeavors that take her away from her family in the evenings and on weekends. “I believe one o f the reasons I was chosen relates to my focus on legal education for and about the L G B T community,” explained A l len. “I try to get out the message that registra tion of domestic partnerships is wonderful, but it is only Oregon-based, so people cannot count on it to provide any benefits that are not Oregon-based.” With that kind o f dedication, it’s not sur prising this isn’t Allen’s first award. She was the recipient o f the Oregon Gay and Lesbian Association’s Diamond Jubilee Award in 2000 and their Award o f Merit in 2008, and she also earned Basic Rights Oregon’s Super Hero Award in 2007.
