Hotels: For all-out luxury, go with the su per plush Four Seasons Maui (fourseasons. com/maui), the finest of several hotels at the expansive Wailea Resort—it’s close to the gay-popular, clothing-optional Little Beach at Makena, too. A good value on the island’s northwest coast, in the historic whaling vil lage of Lahaina, the Outrigger Aina Nalu (outrigger.com) is within walking distance of shopping and dining, and units have kitchenettes or full kitchens. Among B&Bs, the reasonably priced, gay-welcoming Pine apple Inn (pineappleinnmaui.com) is close to Wailea Resort’s shopping and has five charming rooms. Day 3: If you’d like to explore for just a half day, make the trip to some of the island’s in viting towns along the west coast, such as Captain Cook and Kahaluu-Keauhou, and the up-country village of Kainaliu, known for its funky coffeehouses, quirky galleries and offbeat Aloha Theater. Hotels: Again, the Four Seasons—with its inti mate Hualalai property (fourseasons.com/ hualalai)—is the top cushy hotel on the Big Island (it’s easily my favorite resort in H a waii). The property is made up of low-slung cottage clusters facing either the ocean or the lushly landscaped grounds, and the din ing, health club and spa are all superb. This is one of several upscale resorts on the sunny Kohala Coast—less extravagant but still very inviting alternatives include the Fair mont Orchid (fairmont.com/orchid) and the rather sleek and contemporary Waiko- loa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa (marri- otthawaii.com). A 15-mile drive down the coast from Kailua-Kona, the stunning Horizon Guest House (horizonguesthouse.com), which is gay-owned, contains four spectacular suites and has an inground infinity pool with daz zling views of the Pacific. If you’d like to be close to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, consider the warmly furnished Hale Ohia Cottages (haleohia.com), a welcoming sev en-room compound that’s situated beneath a canopy of pine trees. I t’s blissfully peace ful here. JK Day 1 : Acclimate, relax and enjoy your hotel’s peaceful setting. Great dinner options include upscale Merriman’s in Waimea (near Kohala Coast), a pioneer in Hawaiian Re gional Cuisine, and affordable, unprepos sessing Cafe Ohia, in the village of Volcano. This might also be a good evening to check out the island’s lone gay bar, Mask, a laid- back spot with karaoke nights set in a non descript shopping center in Kailua-Kona. Day 2: As in Maui, it’s a good idea to set aside Day 2 for as full an exploration of the island as possible. Start off early, driving across the mid-center of the island on scenic and winding Saddle Road, beneath the state’s highest peak, 13,796-foot Mauna Kea. Arrive in the historic city of Hilo for lunch at cheerful Cafe Pesto, then venture south to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, setting aside time to visit both the East Rift Read more about the frequent travels of A n Zone where lava flows into the ocean (down drew C ollins at thecountyhunter.com and off Highway 130) and the main visitor cen- gaytravel.about.com.
