OREGON S LESBIAN/GAY/BI/TRANS/QUEER NEWSMAGAZINE OCTOBER IS 2010 _I3_ NW NEWS IN B R I E F Berry says it’s “absolutely amazingly won derful” to return to Portland, adding, “Every time I come back my heart dances.” Berry met her wife, Judy Kiser, here. The two mar ried in Baltimore in 1986 in front o f 200 of Berry’s family members. She says 22 mem bers of her family are out because, in her words, “it’s a family where it’s safe to be out. We come from a family that sees God bless ing us.” Berry will carry this message of love and inclusion to the M C C on October 24, where she’ll conduct Sunday morning worship at 9 and 11 a.m. and perform a concert at 6 p.m. She says attendees can expect the words to be changed in her songs to reflect all orienta tions and genders. “Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender—I name it all, because when we hear ourselves in sacred songs, we see that we’re sacred, too.” Spreading this message is Berry’s calling. She’s toured as a gospel singer for 20 years and is proud to be recognized as an “out” singer in the Uncloudy Days Gospel Encyclope dia. “When people read the history o f gos pel,” she says, “They’ll see a rainbow in there.” Berry will have four gospel C D s for sale at the show, as well as hand painted t-shirts and cards that she and Kiser make. —Mike Gillette N W N e w s in B rie f • T h e Portland Latin-A m erican Film Festival returns for a fourth year October 14-20 at the Regal Broadway Metroplex (1000 SW Broadway).
