re: 3 WWW JUSTOUT COM i AUGUST 20 2010 NIGHT LIFE The E-Room is like The L The Last King of Portland Word under the direction of Kings for a Cause helps close down the queen of bars Oh, if the walls of the E-Room could talk—how many sordid and hilarious tales of hookups, breakups, fuckups and make ups could those black walls regale us with? The news of the Egyptian Club’s closure on October 9 sent shock waves through the gay population, in Portland and the lesbian com munity at large. It’s for good reason that the E-Room was named the nation’s best lesbian bar by GayCities—it’s like The L Word un der the direction of David Lynch or Faster; Pussycat! Kill! Kill! with a script rewrite by Michelle Tea. In other words, there’s abso lutely nothing like it—and after October, it will be sorely missed. Get out there and drink up as often as you can before the landmark shutters its doors—and be sure to check out Kings for a Cause, one of the last drag shows presented by the Egyptian Club, on Saturday, August 28. Kings for a Cause is a na tional drag event benefiting the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and other charities. Drag king troupes throughout Amer ica will host events the weekend of August 26 celebrating the art of male illusion and the good that can be done when the community comes together. The Portland installment of Kings will, in addition to the NGLTF, benefit the arts organization Collective O f Geniuses. You’ll be drooling like Pavlov’s dogs with Bruce TD King, Johnny-O, Damein Darkholme Theology, Ryval Theology, Brayden Mi chaels, Phoenix DaHottie and Ecstasy Inferno, among other sexpots gracing the E-Room stage. Host Belinda Carroll will keep the performances by the city’s best drag kings moving along quickly and the DK Go- Go Dancers will keep you mov ing—on the dance floor—as well. Most awesomely, the deaf community is encouraged to attend, with David Lynch or Foster. Pussy- cot! Kill! Kill! with o script rewrite by Michelle Tea. In other words, there's absolutely nothing like it-and after Octo ber. it will be sorely missed. ASL interpretation provided by super rad local group Deaf and Hearing OutReach. Just go—you won’t regret it, and you’ll be part of the last run of a ^lace that’ll go down in Portland history.
