HARD-ROCKING HISTORY REPEATING
Does the past go anywhere? W hether
you used to check the bands at Satyricon,
Blue Gallery and X-Ray Café—or if you’re
still hanging out at the food carts and the
Avalon Arcade on weekend nights—you’ve
got a chance to watch Portland’s musical
bedrock flash forward to the present day. Be
there when history comes back to rock the
Rose City, when Calamity Jane plays their
first show in 18 years at the Clinton/Divi-
sion Street Fair on July 24.
For those unfamiliar with Calamity
Jane, they’re an all-female rock band that
ruled Stumptown from 1989 to 1992 and
profoundly influenced the regional music
scene. The band recorded several singles and
a full-length album for such notable labels as
YoYo Recordings, Sympathy for the Record
Industry, Imp and T/K.
The seminal act played their last show in
1992, opening for Nirvana in Buenos Aires,
Argentina, where they left the stage in a storm
of spit and dirt ("It was as rewarding as...
paying Calamity Jane $5,000 to be heckled
by 20,000 macho boys in Argentina," wrote
Kurt Cobain in the liner notes of Nirvana's
Incesticide.) "We broke our guitars and left
the stage, never to return," remembers band
member Gilly Ann Hanner of
that fateful show.
After the breakup of Calam
ity Jane, guitarist Joanna Bolme
went on to play with Quasi
and Stephen Malkmus and The
Jicks. Singer Hanner took a
different and more aesthetically minded
route, opening a salon with an emphasis on
non-toxic and earth-friendly products on
SE Clinton Street. The band will reunite for
the first time in nearly two decades to give
Division/Clinton Street Fair-goers a taste
of what many consider to be the golden age
of Portland rock on the
event’s Rock Stage—mere
blocks from Gilly s Salon.
Not convinced by hard
hitting all-female rock
'n' roll? Sheesh! There’ll
also be face painting, hair
braiding, art, history performances, bike
rides, vendors and even delicious fair food all
up and down Clinton and Division.
Saturday, July 24, 7:30p.m., Division/Clin
ton Street Fair Rock Stage, SE Clinton and 25th
Ave., fr e e admission, divisionclinton.com.
