A last-minute look at what's in store at Tom
McCall Waterfront Park
BY AMANDA SCHURR
After introducing our coverage in the
June 4 issue, Just Out is back with even more
Pride— and updates on a weekend, and a
year, o f change.
The much discussed parade route, which
steps off at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 20 at
N W 13th and Burnside and winds through
Old Town, isn’t the only march making
headlines. Organizers with Pride Northwest
announced an earlier meeting time for the
annual Portland Dyke March, in order to
accommodate participants catching both the
march and the entertainment lineup on the
main and community stages at Tom M cCall
Waterfront Park (see full schedule at right).
The 2010 march will assemble an hour
earlier, at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 19. Partici
pants will step o ff at 6 from the North Park
Blocks (N. Park Ave. and W. Burnside St.)
and will follow the Sunday Pride parade
route, going down W. Burnside, north on
Broadway, east on Davis and south on Naito
Parkway to W aterfront Park. “It’s once a
year that this crowd converges on down
town to carry a unique message and part o f
the fun o f it is socializing beforehand and
visiting with friends, both old and new,”
says Pride Northwest’s Hank Renfrow o f
the “slightly modified” route’s “comfortable
staging area.”
Our four-legged friends will have their
own chance to show their proud colors. The
third annual Portland Pride Pet Parade,
presented by Healthy Pets Northwest and
beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday on the fes
tival main stage, will ask audience members
to cast their text message vote for winners
in the “Owner/Pet Look-A -Like,” “M ost
Sport-a-licious,” “Gayest D og” and “M ost
Silly Pet” categories.
As for the main event, Sunday’s Pride
parade will march to a different beat— and

route— and will be led by none other than
Portland legend and Stonewall 40 Trans
Hero, Grand Marshal Darcelle XV. She will
be joined by Pride honorees Kevin Easton
(Spirit o f Pride Award) and Ben Brown, Jr.
(Pride in Action Award), recognized for their
service and contributions within the LG BTQ _
community. Easton stepped down earlier this
year as executive director o f Equity Foun
dation; Brown, Jr. is a tireless H IV /A ID S
activist and current chair o f Oregon Leather
Pride 2010, among other accomplishments.
And don’t forget the second annual Port
land D rag Race, a one-mile costumed run
down the parade route that sprints into ac
tion 15 minutes before the main event.
This year also marks the renaming o f the
Family Tent to the Bonnie Tinker Family
Tent, in tribute to the pioneering LG BTQ _
rights advocate, who died in a bicycle acci
dent last July. “It has been aptly named to
respect and reflect the work she did in this
community with Love M akes a Family,”
explains Renfrow. “She was an asset to this
community and we would like to honor her
memory as such.”
A kid-friendly environment where par
ents and their children can participate in
age-appropriate activities, the Family Tent
