Classical Concert to
Benefit BRO and HRC
Just two days before Portland Pride
2010 begins, classical music lovers and
philanthropists alike will have the op
portunity to support two of the biggest
LG BTQ jights organizations in the coun
try: Basic Rights Oregon and the Human
Rights Campaign.
From 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 17
at Sherman and Clay Pianos (131 NW
13th Ave.), some of Portland’s most tal
ented classical music artists will perform a
concert of solos and ensemble pieces, with
all donations benefiting BRO and HRC.
Soprano Lisa Florentino, PSU Coordina
tion Movement and Professor of Piano
Lisa Marsh, PSU clarinetist and W ind
Studies Chair Barbara Heilmar, Portland
Lesbian Choir Director Kirsten Hart, and
many more students and artists will be on
hand to deliver rousing renditions of clas
sical, operatic and new music pieces.
There is a $25 minimum suggested
donation, to be split evenly between BRO
and HRC, though no one will be denied a
seat to listen.

A local documentary filmmaker is
looking for GLBT military veterans to
tell their stories as part of a new project.
“For GLBT veterans who want to tell
their story on film, this can be a unique
opportunity to convey the adventure of
the military experience, combined with
the poignancy of the coming out process,”
said Charles Calabria, member of Port-
land-based Veterans for Human Rights,
via press release. Calabria, a documentary
film student at the Northwest Film Insti
tute, invites GLBT military vets to par
ticipate in his upcoming picture, entitled
Serving In Fear. Those interested should

In late May, the Lambda Literary
Foundation announced the winners of the
22nd Annual Lambda Literary Awards—
including Portland Queer: Tales of the Rose
City, edited by Ariel Gore (Atlas of the
Human Heart) and winner in the anthol
ogy category.
Following the announcement of the
awards finalists, Gore told Just Out: “I t’s
been so delicious, as so many folks are
asking, ‘Is print dead?’ ... to see old-school
beautiful print literature recognized. ...
Portland Queer started out with social
goals—to offer a platform for marginal
ized voices—but it is the writing that
ultimately sets [it] apart.”
The anthology features the work of lo
cal scribes Dexter Flowers, Donal Mosher,
Marc Acito, Sarah Dougher, Tom Span-
bauer and others. For a full list of winners,
