Cascade AIDS
Project. Red Dress
PDX and Basic Rights
Oregon Announce
Recent Fundraiser
Figures
The tallies are in for three of the
Portland LGBTQ_ community’s biggest
annual fundraisers.
The Red Dress PDX: Redrum party
attracted more than 2,000 men and wom
en on April 17 at the Bison Building, and
some 302 attendees purchased VIP tick
ets. A check was presented on Tuesday,
June 1 at Gilt Club for $40,000, to be
donated to the organization’s 2010 ben
eficiaries: SafeChoice Domestic Violence
Program of YWCA Clark County, The
Men’s Wellness Center and Q_Center.
Cascade AIDS Project’s 21st Annual
Art Evening and Auction was held at
the Bison Building May 1, and generated
$427,000, a 20 percent increase from the
2009 tally, and some $7,000 more than
CAP’s goal for the event.
“What I’ve heard from most everyone
is that this was one of the best auctions
they’ve ever been to for CAP,” Michael
Kaplan, CA P’s executive director, told Just
Out. “I am thrilled with the outcome.”
Kaplan reported that ticket sales in
creased from 105 seats sold in 2009 to 150
this year, and that across the board—from
funds acquired through paddle raises, live
art and silent art auctions—the event saw
an overall increase, with the exception of
a decrease in sponsorship.
Finally, the 17th Annual Oregonians
Against Discrimination Business Leaders
Luncheon, held April 21, raised just over
$100,000 to support the work of Basic
Rights Oregon. Over 450 business, com
munity and government leaders attended
the event at the Oregon Convention
Center to learn more about supporting
BRO’s education campaigns.

Bitch Uninvited From
OUT/LOUD Music Fest
Over “Transphoblc"
Remarks
O UT/LO UD, the University of Or
egon’s annual queer music fest, removed
Bitch from its lineup of performers less
than a week before the May 21 show
following community concerns over the
musician’s “transphobic remarks and
ongoing conflict with the trans com
munity,” according to a statement from
planning committee member Siche
Green-Mitchell.
In the release, Green-Mitchell cited
“disrespectful statements about and to trans
people” made by Bitch, including state
ments supporting the Michigan Womyn’s
Music Festival’s admission policy, which
excludes transwomen.
“The decision to not have Bitch perform
is part of the OUT/LOUD committee’s
commitment to the intentional creation of
safe spaces,” Green-Mitchell wrote.
In a statement sent to Just Out , Bitch
said that her past remarks had been taken
out of context and defended her affiliation
with and support of gender-variant com
munities. She said she was still paid for the
canceled performance, but was frustrated
by actions she viewed as “willfully creating
a rift in our community.”
Bitch took offense to efforts to paint
her as transphobic: “I am not only part of
the genderqueer spectrum, but have been
[working] ... for well over a decade, to
broaden the expectations of gender and its
confines. ... All of my actions and state
ments are from that perspective.”
Rather than respond to specific com
ments made by OUT/LOUD organiz
ers, Bitch said it was more important to
express that “I am and always will be a
staunch supporter of women’s rights, of
queer rights, and of trans rights. My work
expresses such.”
