Idol alum B la k e Lew is

Somewhere between Adam Lam bert’s
and Clay Aiken’s successful tenures as
American Idol runners-up, there was Blake
Lewis, the Pacific Northwest native whose
beat box and scatting skills set him apart
from his karaoke competition and took him
all the way to the sixth season’s final round.
Since coming in second to Jordin Sparks
back in 2007, Lewis has carved a niche for
himself with his slick grooves, synth loops
and club-ready beats. The title track on his
sophomore album, last fall’s Heartbreak on
Vinyl , recently landed the top spot on Bill­
board’s H ot Dance Airplay roster, marking
the first time an A.I. alum has scored #1
hits on both the Airplay and Dance/Club
Play charts.
Though, unlike fellow A.I. vets Lambert
and Aiken, Lewis is straight, he’s become
a fixture on the Pride circuit (Austin, O r­
lando) and is among the headliners set
for this year’s main stage at Tom M cCall
Waterfront Park. He performs at 5:15 p.m.

Ju st Out caught up with Lewis, now 28,
the afternoon following A.I. s season nine
finale, and during a brief stop in his soon-
to-be-vacated Seattle home— he was pack­
ing to move to Los Angeles the next week.

JO : Last night’s show must have been a
unique experience to be a part of, consider­
ing it was a certain judge’s swan song.
BL: Yeah. I was very blessed to be asked
to come back, and to step back on that stage
again, it was a really cool feeling. It was
almost like going back to the finale at my
season. It was a little bittersweet, especially
for the reason we were there— for Simon
leaving. It was kinda like the end o f an era.
To be a part o f this phenomenal T V show
that has touched so many lives around the
world, especially here, was kinda crazy but it
was fun and chaotic and lots o f laughter.
JO : Who were you rooting for, Lee DeW-
yze or Crystal Bowersox?
BL: I was gunning for Crystal but I
knew [Lee] was going to win, so, you know.
... I do like him.
JO : You’re among the proof positive that
placing second has its own rewards.
BL: Yeah, coming off the show, in that
top 10 or even top 12, there’s opportunities
afterward that wouldn’t have come had you
not been on the show.
JO : In the wake o f so many recent
changes, what are your thoughts on the fu­
ture o f the series?
BL: I only think it’s gonna work if they go
a little deeper into the actual character devel­
opment of the show, focusing a little more on
the production. No one can fill Simon’s shoes,
so I think it would be good if they just leave
the three judges and then had an amazing
judge each week... Bono, Sting, Stevie Won­
der, Prince, Simon Le Bon o f Duran Duran,
Dave Gahan of Dépêche Mode, [laughing]
You know, people / like.
JO : W hat’s it like performing on your
home turf versus other parts o f the country?
BL: I love it. I feel more connected, hon­
estly. ... I’m a West Coast boy, for sure, and
Pacific Northwest, more so than anything. I
