Best of the Rest
Our cup. and calendar, overfloweth with Pride events
BY AMANDA SCHURR

is simple: make public what went on in the
trial with impromptu performances of some of
the actual testimony given in the courtroom.
For the Brody Theater’s event, education di
rector and queer improviser Brad Fortier is
assembling performers from various Portland
It happens this time every year: a magni
tude of events that just so happen to fall on
the same weekend, date, evening—and prove
there’s plenty of rainbow connections beyond
Tom McCall Waterfront Park. With so much
Pride, so few hours in the day and so many
options for celebrating, reflecting or simply
dressing up, negotiating your seasonal itiner
ary is a daunting task.
Just Out culled through the press releases
and emails and Facebook posts, oh my! to
suggest a few events worth marking on your
calendar. And since we can’t possibly fit all

Tickets are $15, $12 for students with ID,
available by calling 503-224-2227 or at bro-
dytheater.com. A portion of proceeds will
benefit Basic Rights Oregon. Visit equality-

Earlier this year, Americans couldn’t wit
ness the Prop. 8 trial because supporters of the
California legislation successfully appealed to
block cameras from televising proceedings.
David Heilbroner’s portrait revisits the
days when psychoanalysts equated homo
sexuality with mental illness and advised
aversion therapy—even lobotomies, pub
lic service announcements warned youth
against predatory homosexuals and police
entrapment was rampant. T hat is, until
June 28, 1969, when a bar raid changed
everything.
