I t’s Pride in activism, and a brave service veteran who is speaking up, out and against “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” I t ’s Pride in acceptance, and the warm and fuzzy em brace o f the Oregon Bears. I t’s Pride in partnership— from block parties to modern dance to ladies nights. I t’s Pride in busi ness— and a good bottle o f red. I t ’s Pride in the performing arts, Pride in music. And yes, it’s Pride in ping pong playing, thanks to an aspiring table tennis virtuoso with her sights set on this year’s Gay Games in Germany. In a 40th anniversary event commemorating the very first Portland Pride celebration, organizer Pride Northwest, now in its 16th year, aims to convey the over arching sentiment of pride in community with this year’s theme: “Pride to the People.” The mantra stands as a testament to the continued teamwork of Portland’s LGBTQ_ community, a perpetual symbiosis that festi val organizers hope will deliver the best Pride festival to date. But the whole shebang hasn’t come without its share of criticisms. Change is inevitable in an event as hyped, and as important, as Portland Pride. This year’s festival will include mainstays like the Q_ Center living room, the senior tent, the youth tent, the Bonnie Tinker family tent, PABA village, as well as all o f the other ame nities you’ve come to expect from Pride. There will be a food drive for Esther’s Pantry/Our House o f Portland, a mini travel expo on site, and new additions like the HIV
