followed by a student speaker and this year’s
guest keynote speaker, Dr. Ronni Sanlo. A
U C LA professor and author of four books,
Sanlo originated the idea o f a Lavender
Graduation, which she first instituted at the
University of M ichigan in 1995. “Right now,
we’re trying to get our Lavender Gradua
tion into being a more solid annual event,”
Payseno explains. “[Sanlo] started the move
ment, and th at’s why we chose her.”
Following the address, the Q RC will
announce the winners of this year’s Pride
Awards, which recognize LGBTQ_graduates
who have exhibited outstanding achieve
ment and contributions to the community.
Payseno, who won a Pride Award last year,
says the experience “was really powerful. A
big part of it was having my family here, so
that they could understand and recognize
what I had been doing.”
For Bostain, who was recently accepted
into an AmeriCorps position, the hectic
days preceding commencement have proven
a distraction from the approaching Lavender
Graduation— and its significance. But when
she finally paused a few days ago to think
about the milestone, the reality hit her.
“I ’ve been so busy planning,” Bostain
says, “I almost forgot, ‘Olvyeah, it’s gonna be
an emotional week.’”
