I’m writing in support of Paul van Orden
for Multnomah County Commission.
I’ve known Paul for years, and have been
impressed by his long commitment to LGBT
issues. H e’s marched in marches, helped
emerging queer bands be heard when he had
a radio show, and has generally been very sup
portive of the community.
Paul has the experience we need in these
tough economic times. He knows how to
work with small businesses and neighbor
hoods, cutting through red tape to help
local businesses thrive while protecting the
community’s livability.
H e’s also got a firm handle on how govern
ment works, having worked at the city for 14
years. And he gives back to the community,
acting as a Big Brother in the Big Brother/Big
Sister program and serving on the board of
Growing Gardens for six years, helping low-
income people grow their own affordable,
healthy food.

In a crowded field, Paul stands out as the

Maria Rubio has always supported our
community. Maria came to the aid of the
Coalition Against Hate Crimes at [a] very
crucial time when the coalition was planning
the 2006 Oregon Hate Crimes Conference.
... W hen Maria was Mayor Tom Potter’s
public safety director, Maria was always ac
cessible and open to dialog about community
concerns. Maria will be an excellent commis
sioner for Multnomah County.

We need Maria Rubio for Multnomah
County Commissioner in District 2, and she
deserves our support.
Maria is and has been a staunch advocate
for LGBTQ_equality, supports same-sex mar
To
riage rights unequivocally and has supported
our community’s causes for years. Beyond that,
she offers a wide range of experience needed
to be effective in this post and serve the inter
est of all voters, most notably all the minority
communities currently not represented on the
Board of Commissioners....
Most of us reading this paper had to come
out of a closet at some point in our lives. For
Rubio, it is time to come out from behind the
scenes! ... It is time for her to emerge from
the background and take the leadership posi

I don’t give my endorsement and active
support lightly; when I do, it’s because a
candidate inspires me and instills confidence
that they can and will bring real change and
improvement to my community. Maria Rubio,
who is running for county commissioner, is
that person. Maria looks at the issues in terms
of collaboration, relationships and long-term
solutions. She isn’t interested in quick fixes,
political and ideological turf wars, or avoiding
the hard issues.
W ith over thirty years of experience, Maria
has worked at every level of government, giv
ing her exactly the knowledge necessary to not
only get things done, but to improve collabora-
