and nonprofit sectors, including more than
15 years as a campaign strategist and man­
ager on topics ranging from human rights to
business and political candidacy.
New this year, the Pride in Action Award
recognizes someone involved in grassroots-
level community organizing without the
handing or support o f an established or­
ganization. The inaugural award will go to
Ben Brown, Jr., a local graphic designer who
has done work for a number o f community
groups including Bad Girls, Cascade A ID S
Project and the Imperial Sovereign Court.
Brown was the Media Chairman for Capitol
Pride in Salem (2001-‘02), served on the
Oregon Bears Board o f Directors (2005-‘08)
and is a former Mr. Oregon State Leather.
In rather Pride-related updates, this year’s
Portland Dyke March will start an hour
earlier than in past years. The march, which
usually assembles on the North Park Blocks
at 6 p.m. Saturday and steps off at 7, will now
meet up at 5 p.m. June 19 and begin at 6 to
ensure that participants don’t miss the head­
lining entertainment at Waterfront Park. The
march route will also change to mirror that
o f Sunday’s Pride parade (full story on p. 16).

a little under $2,000 short. Contributors can
pledge anywhere from $5 up to help with the
production, and no money will change hands
unless the goal is reached by May 14.
