The City o f Portland will continue col
lecting community input for the Portland
Plan through January 2011, when a draft of
the plan is expected to be released.
Adams said he hoped a “robust, inclusive
plan” would be created because o f the exten
sive outreach. “We re trying to be make this
as people-focused as possible,” he explained,
admitting, “We’re going to be prioritizing
actions that have multiple benefits because
we have limited resources.”
It remains to be seen as to how the
Portland Plan could include and implement
changes the gay community would like to
see, such as legalizing gay marriage.
“It’s not as clear to me how we would do
that,” said Eden Babbs, the public informa
tion officer for the Bureau o f Planning, and
Sustainability, the department, in charge o f
the plan.
As to whether issues important to the
LG BTQ com m unity will be included in the
plan, Adams said, “We’ll see.”
“The better the argument...the more
likely it will be a city-wide priority,” he
added.
* City Commissioner Dan Saltzman also
attended the town hall and expressed skepti
cism that specific issues such as gay marriage
or dealing with school bullying would be sig
nificant enough to include in the blueprint.
“I don’t think those issues are going to be in
the Portland Plan per se,” Saltzman said.
When pushed as to reasons why not,
Saltzman said he “was only speculating”
and added that the Portland Plan is about
“what people’s aspirations are for the City of
Portland”— and that gay marriage “could” be
a part o f that vision.
Michael Fisher, 36, called Adams “a
huge advocate” for the LGBTQcom m unity,
and felt that would likely make a difference
when the Portland Plan is written.
Many participants believed their views
would be taken seriously. “He shows up. I
don’t think that all the politicians show up,”
Pearl said o f Adams, also a Q C en ter board
member. But others questioned the extent to
which issues broached Monday night would
be adequately reflected in a plan that is
meant to meet the needs o f the entire city.
“I’m hoping that some o f the issues we
brought up get included in the city budget
[and the plan],” said Kathryn Burlingham,
44.
“It’s so broad, and it’s great to get peo'-
ple’s input on everything,” observed Kaplan.
But he wondered how people’s comments
would be “boiled down” in a thoughtful way
that reflected there was a public process that
garnered so many opinions.
“That’s something for them to figure
out,” Kaplan said. vLft
