O REGO N S GAY/LESBIAN/BI/TRANS NEWSMAGAZINE MARCH 5 2010 P R O F IL E we started doing Bear to Make a Difference outside o f Denver, then it became about acknowledging people in their community, [of] which Governor Roberts is a perfect example, as is Darcelle.” The foundations ties to Portland through Bean, as well as M S F ’s Director o f Development and local resident Andrew Tweedie, made it a perfect location to take the Bear to Make a Difference reception outside o f Denver for the first time, Judy explained. The event is normally an annual gala dinner held in October. Judy reported that the scope o f the Matthew Shepard Foundation, now enter ing its 11th year, has not so much shifted as it has been enhanced. Whether it be acting as a resource for information available to organizations like the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (G L S E N ), or as a figurehead for activism in the main stream fight for acceptance o f the gay com munity, Judy’s mission remains a singular one. “Since we started the foundation, we’ve been working to try to make things bet ter for the upcoming generations,” she said. “The focus hasn’t changed. Because the Hate Crimes legislation is now passed doesn’t mean our work is over. We have many more things to do in the gay commu nity. We want to keep the dialogue going, educate the public at large, and be a source o f information.” Still, some new facets o f the foundation bear mentioning. M S F Program Director Thomas B. Howard has taken most o f his duties on the road, translating into more high school visits on behalf o f the founda tion. Additionally, both o f the current Web sites (matthewsplace.com and matthew- shepard.org) will be revamped to a more user-friendly template. Judy said she’s looking forward to her visit to Portland, and specifically to honor ing both Governor Roberts and Darcelle. “I have met Governor Roberts several times; I think she’s ju st wonderful,” said Judy. “I ’ve only met Darcelle a couple o f times, and they’ve been at events, so it’s not been extended conversation.
