For the past decade, the Matthew I Shepard Foundation has promoted the ; awareness of discrimination based on | sexual orientation or gender through its j mantra of replacing hate with understand- | ing, compassion, and acceptance. Under ; the watchful helm of Matthews parents j Judy and Dennis Shepard, the foundation \ has instituted and supported diversity j programs in education and to help youth organizations with efforts like the Equal- j t ity Initiative, Youth First Initiative, and the | Erase Hate Initiative. Just last October 22, Judy and Dennis flanked President Barack Obama, along j with the family of James Byrd, Jr., when the ; passage of the Matthew Shepard and James j Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act ^as j signed into law. Judy has stepped down from her role as j executive director of MSF, taking on the j chair of the foundations governing board, | and has been criss-crossing the country j promoting her book The Meaning o f M at- I theuo, as well as appearing at various col- j leges and high school campuses. On Monday, March 29, Judy will attend the “Bear to Make a Difference” Celebrity Teddy Bear Auction and Reception, held at Wilfs Restaurant and Bar.
