I ve never be e n a b le to be one th in g a n d p re te n d to b e som ething else a n d only
show h a lf of w ho I am . a n d th a t s how I was with my career, too." says Sarah Bettens
definitely connects all of us.
But when it comes to the things I write
about, a lot are very universal, not just
about being gay but how old I am and the
things I am learning about life and how I’ve
changed. A straight audience can relate to
those things.
JO : So getting older and learning more
about yourself—how are those things
coming through in your songwriting?
I’ve kinda just been letting it happen.
Most of the time it’s not until after I’ve
made the record I’m like, “Well, I must have
been going through that little phase!” That
first solo album, I had to get a million things
out, but now I’m starting to realize in my life
I can look on the outside and not all these
songs have to be about me. Not that I don’t
struggle anymore, but I’ve found I’m a lot
more balanced.
JO : How has that balance manifested in
your live shows?
The shows we are doing now are so
M a lo y's Jew elry W o rk s h o p
incredibly relaxed—which is not to say it’s
easy, because it’s never easy to be minutes
away from making an ass of yourself. But I
don’t know if I would have had the confi
dence to do a show like this 10 years ago.
JO : You sound really at peace. What
changed?
I got older. I found my late twenties to
be very tumultuous...for me it was a very
chaotic, confusing, defining time. And now
I found this peace I never had when I was
a teenager, never had in my twenties. I’m
sure it has a lot to do with my girlfriend,
and she’s got two kids I’ve been raising with
her for the last eight years, and it’s all falling
into place. To me the career is a bonus—my
private life, that’s number one. So my career
is this fantastic bonus on top of everything.
