the impetus for She Bop. “Portland deserves
choices when it comes to shopping for
quality sex toys...Our goal is to educate,
while offering a fun, safe and comfortable
environment for women and their partners
and where everyone is welcome.”
Cowan and Doumitt are excited to detail
the nuances of fun items such as the Club
Vibe, which jiggles your naughty bits in time
to the music, or unique and beautiful dildos
made out of surgical steel, wood, ceramic,
glass or silicon. And though the shop is
dedicated to making women and queer
people feel comfortable, there are plenty of
toys for the boys, including locally made kits
for reproducing your own member in a host
of different substances.
She Bop also strives to be as “green”
as possible, fitting into one of Portland’s
environmentally conscious ideals. The store
also plans to host workshops on sexuality,
and organize fundraisers to benefit local
nonprofits, such as domestic violence shel
ters and groups promoting safe sex; Doumitt
hopes to collaborate with QCenter, too,
located just down the street.
Queer resources are an essential part of
She Bop’s mission. The owners are in the
process of expanding their literature related
to transitioning, and various educational
videos are available for sale. There’s also just
good of porn—a highly anticipated offering,
as it will be the only place in town to rent
underground queer gems such as Pink and
White Productions’ Crashpad series.

Thrives on the Three Rs
Since 1998, Portland Store Fixtures has
been dedicated to the reusing, repurposing,
and recycling of store fixtures, and pretty
much anything youd ever see inside a store.
Packaging, hangers, pieces of metal, glass,
plastic doodads—if you’ve got it, Portland
Store Fixtures can find a way to sell it, reuse
it, or dispose of it properly.
The business makes its mark by resell
ing both new and used fixtures to hopeful
entrepreneurs, as well as donating fixtures
to a wide variety of causes. On Ninth and
SW Morrison downtown, for instance, you
can check out one of many pop-up stores
designed to bolster the aesthetic edge of the
city’s main commercial properties. Portland
Store Fixtures supplied By Oregon with all
of its fixtures for their inventory of hand
bags, shoes, jewelry and more.
Owners Penney Stephenson and Kat
Schon also work with the School and Reuse
Community Action Project (SCRAP), of
which Schon is a board member.
With a small staff of 11—including
Stephenson and Schon—Portland Store
Fixtures’ warehouse occupies a huge area of
the Southeast’s industrial district, boasting
44,000 square feet of space on the corner of
SE Main and Second Avenue. The business,
as you’d imagine, was fairly unaffected by the
recession.
“People who buy used are frugal, and in
an economy like this, people are forced to
be frugal, so they’re looking for the deals,”
explained Schon. “Also, adversity creates
that diversity, that change, so a lot of people
are actually changing their stores, adding
space to their stores, or opening new stores.
So people who’ve been laid off are actually
opening businesses.”
Portland Store Fixtures will clean out
everything from entire stores (everything
except for garbage, a loose term with Schon),
to someone’s cluttered back room. Living in
Portland, understanding a sustainable, eco-
friendly business isn’t as tough as in other
parts of the country. But you’d be hard-
pressed to find as devoted a following as the
PSF staff in the ways of green business.
“It’s smart business. If you’re being
efficient on how you use energy and what
you do with your waste stream, it saves you
money,” explained Schon. “Business-wise,
bottom line, it makes sense. Being in Port
land, it makes sense. I was quoted saying,
‘It’s about time we lived in our environment,
not on it.’Just because it’s easy to throw stuff
in the dumpster doesn’t mean that’s where it
belongs.”
