Get Away. Get Charmed
in Storied Astoria
When planning to travel, I often make
a checklist of specific criteria that a locale
must have. Astoria, Oregon may have suc
ceeded in that list.
Proximity to Portland? Check...As
toria is about a two-hour drive from the
Rose City. Interesting, unique things to
do? Check...the city has impeccable water
views, a bustling “1920s” downtown, and
quirky restaurants, breweries and coffee
houses. Queer friendly? Check...Astoria
boasts its share of GLBT-owned businesses
in a welcoming environment.
Astoria may, in fact, be the perfect long-
weekend getaway for the GLBT traveler.
The city rests on the south shore of the
Columbia River and is located at the north
west part of the state. The water is part of
Astoria’s charm, as evident by its working
and walkable waterfront. The hillside is
impressively filled with Victorian homes, of
which 25 percent are eligible for “Historical
Landmark” status.
I recently stayed at the gay-friendly
Cannery Pier Hotel, a boutique hotel built
600 feet over the Columbia River (www.
cannerypierhotel.com). The accommodation
is located a mile or so from the core down
town area, but its amenities and views make

it worth the stay.
Here, you can watch large container
ships effortlessly float down the Columbia
River and under the gothic Astoria-Megler
Bridge. I saw a couple of vessels heading to
various international destinations, confirm
ing Astoria’s role as a working river town.
Each room has a fireplace, a clawfoot tub
and an outdoor balcony. However, the Can
nery Pier Hotel really shines in its treatment
of pets. My Welsh Terrier enjoyed the ame
nities designed especially for him—a large
dog bed, health treats, and even his own dog
bowls.
The hotel is located right off U.S. High
way 30, the main artery in Astoria. Rates
start at $169 and include a nightly wine
hour (5-6 p.m.).
I arrived in Astoria by mid-afternoon on
a recent Saturday, and the fall colors were in
full bloom. After settling into the Cannery,

So why let setup charges

you from printing two sides
of your next set of custom

readers, Blue Ink will print
the second side, with one
color, free of charge.
