DANCING
ZOMBIES
TAKE OVER THE W ORLD
Did you catch a glimpse of Portland’s D irty D ancing flash
mob? If you missed the spectacle that glorious summer night,
here’s another chance to impress your friends and lover(s)—par
ticipate in your very own flash mob. On Saturday, October 24,
Portland will host the Third Annual "Thrill the World" event.
The extravaganza, all-the-more timely in the wake of the King of
Pop’s passing this June, will benefit SMYRC.
Do you recall the first time you witnessed that epic Michael
Jackson video? As a young gay kid, I remember being at once
amazed and horrified. Dancing zombies? How does Michael move
like that? Over 20 years later, “Thriller” appears as complicated
as ever, complete with moves most of us know on sight but can’t
name. YouTube is littered with footage of countless fans attempt
ing its wonders, from drunken wedding guests to Filipino prison
ers. There is, however, something infinitely cooler about a bunch
of Portland hipsters, queers, dancers, and queer dancing hipsters
covering themselves in fake blood and dirt, all synchronized to the
beloved track.
Thrill the World set global records in 2008. Over 4,000
people from 10 countries simultaneously performed the “Thriller”
dance—over 60 from Portland. This year, the event hopes to

break a Guinness World Record with over 270,000 participants,
and Portland organizers aim to improve upon last year’s impressive
showing. They’re planning a flash mob (yes!) and keeping the loca
tion secret until the week of the event.
Donations, $5 and up, will benefit Portland’s Sexual Minority
Youth Resource Center (SMYRC). SMYRC serves Portland’s
gay, lesbian, transgender, queer and questioning young people.
Money raised will help the center provide individual and family
counseling, leadership development, outreach, and specialized
skill building programs. Often a last resort—and always a critical
resource—SMYRC works to help young people succeed while
cultivating peer and community support.
