Café Nell's One-Year
Anniversary Clambake
to Benefit Basic Rights
Oregon
Following up from Just Out's business
profile on Portland gay-owned Northwest
hot spot Café Nell last issue, the “American
version o f a French brasserie” will celebrate
its one-year anniversary in style on Sunday,
September 13.
If you’ve got 15 clams, Café Nell is
providing the real clams during an afternoon
and evening outdoor clambake in the park
ing lot behind the café, $15 is the suggested
donation for admission, as all proceeds will
benefit Basic Rights Oregon. Your dona
tion covers cocktails, wine, beer, food and
entertainment by the Chapman Swifts.
“We’re going ‘all out,”’ said owner Darren
Creeley. “It’s been a heck o f a year for all of
us. We not only want to celebrate the mile
stone of one year in Northwest Portland, but
set the stage for an annual fundraising event
to give back to the community that we’ve
chosen to be a part of.”
Creeley also gave a sneak preview of
the event, citing sand dunes, clam diggers,
fire pits and beach balls as anticipated focal
points for the shindig. In short, it has the
makings of one o f the end of summer’s best
parties.
Legacy Health Care has been generous
enough to provide parking for the event at
NW 20th and Lovejoy, said Creeley. “So
there will be plenty o f parking available for
people who come from across town. Or out
o f town.... We’ve already received several
RSVPs from out-of-towners.”
The clambake begins at 3 p.m., and shells
shall be shucked until 9 p.m. RSVPs are ap
preciated by emailing clambake@cafenell.com.

Portland Gay Men’s
Chorus Receives Grant
The Portland Gay Men’s Chorus
announced it is the recipient o f a $20,000
grant from the Spirit Mountain Community
Fund. For PG M C, one of the nation’s oldest
gay-identified choruses and an active part of
the Portland community for almost 30 years,
the grant couldn’t have come at a better
time.
Said the chorus’ artistic director, Bob
Mensel, via press release: “PGM C has
strived to examine every penny we spend
and make judicial cuts when possible. Still
there are some areas, especially in regard to
our artistic vision and outreach programs,
where we definitely feel the pinch of the
economic downturn.”
The Confederated Tribes o f Grand
Ronde through the Spirit Mountain
Community Fund invests in programs and
services that “promote self-sufficiency and
inclusively,” according to Director Shelly
Hanson. The PG M C was singled out as
“a shining example o f a local agency that
promotes diversity and understanding. It
is an honor to promote the values o f this
outstanding organization,” Hanson said.
Spirit Mountain Community Fund
donates some $4 million each year to local
programs and services that benefit citizens
striving for self-sufficiency.
'Ibis is the second grant the chorus
has received from the Community Fund.
PG M C will perform a free concert at
Pioneer Square at 3 p.m. Saturday, October
3, as part o f an L G B T Resource Fair on the
square scheduled from 1-5 p.m. For more
information on PG M C, visit www.pdxgmc.
