At its August luncheon, the Portland
Area Business A ssociation (PABA) an
nounced the recipients o f its 2009 LGBTQ _
Scholarships for the coming school year.
Briahna Jarcho, Sami Jarrah, Christopher
Wilson and Michael Tofte, each o f whom
identify as gay, lesbian, bi or trans or are
children o f gay, lesbian, bi or trans indi
viduals, will receive scholarships ranging
between $750 and $1,500. Winners were
selected based on academic achievement,
involvement with the community, demon- *
strated financial need and the potential to
excel in their chosen fields....

field— think sexual violence is a problem, but
just 72 percent feel it is in their community.
Additionally, 87 percent said that sexual
violence prevention and awareness tailored
to the gay, lesbian, bi and trans community is
needed, with more than 60 percent believing
local agencies and law enforcement are ill
equipped. “The take-home message was that
sexual violence is real and complicated for
members o f the LGBTQ_community,” said
lead author and professor Jeffrey L. Todahl.

new, political group o f young gay, lesbian,
bi and trans leaders and allies in the metro
area committed to social justice and the
fight for G L B T rights. QPower describes
itself as “queer Portlanders organizing and
