The Portland Sisters o f Perpetual Indul
gence and the Art Institute o f Portland are
partnering for a scholarship contest on July
25 at Embers Ave. (110 NW Broadway) in
Old Town to design a new coronet for the
Sisters.
The Sisters have been serving Portland’s
gay, lesbian, bi and trans population for four
years with support, education and develop
ment within the community through chari
table acts and outreach - and in a fashion
that promotes universal joy.
Each fully professed Order o f the Sisters
of Perpetual Indulgence is required to have
a signature coronet, said
Sister AnNa Wrecks-Ya,
founding member o f the
Portland Sisters.

catholic or otherwise,
have to endure pain in
the service o f their mission. The Fruitbowl
has been ours.”
The Sisters have teamed up with the
AIO P to have students design a new, more
comfortable and user-friendly, but still visu
ally fantastic coronet. The contest is open to
all AIO P students, and has also been made
a mandatory assignment for a debut Hat
Design class, said Sister AnNa Wrecks-Ya.
The night of the contest, fully professed
Sisters o f Portland will first model the origi
nal Fruitbowl, then change into and model
the prototypes created by A IO P students.
The audience will vote by donation for its
favorite design, the winner then presented
with a $500 scholarship from The Portland
Sisters o f Perpetual Indulgence.
The 21+ evening will include a DJ and
no-host bar. There is no cover. Visit www.

Just two days before the TransMarch
Gender (Free) For All, a new monthly gen

day, July 25 at Red Cap Garage (1035 SW
Stark), with fabulous acts including D
Word, DJ Girlfriends, and D J Automaton.
The theme for the inaugural party is “Pink
or Punk.”
The $3 cover charge, plus every dollar of
Red Cap bartenders’ tips, will go toward giv
ing a lump sum o f cash to one trans person
who is unable to afford surgery. The event is
presented by Blue Monster Productions, aka
Adam North, formerly o f Sissyboy, a trio of
Portland-based drag performers.
“Until our healthcare system or govern
ment catch up with real medical needs, we
have to realize that amazing, beautiful trans
people in our community are not living their
lives to the fullest just because of a little bit
o f money and a little bit o f surgery,” said
North. “The first recipient o f the grant has
been binding his breasts for 8 years now. It’s
painful, humiliating, unnecessary, and it’s
