NetRlppers Hosting Soccer
Tournament This Weekend
Portland’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans
soccer club, NetRippers F.C., will host its
second annual co-ed soccer tournament on
Saturday, July 4 at Fernhill Park in North
east Portland (N E 37th and Ainsworth).
The entire weekend will be packed with
NetRippers F.C. soccer events too. The
tournament begins at noon on Saturday, and
participants are urged to arrive early to sign
up and warm up for the grass-field battle.
Board member Virginia Thompson encour
ages those interested in playing to arrive as
late as Saturday to sign-up as sub-in players
for any team. Players from as far as Van
couver, B.C. and Seattle, WA, have signed
up for the tournament, and Thompson says
the registered players consist o f 25 percent
female participants.
“We encourage everyone to come out
and watch,” says Thompson. “It’s not a
hyper-competitive tournament, and it’s
all-inclusive.”
Following the tournament, a post
tournament celebration will be hosted by
Boxxes (1035 SW Stark St.), which will be
open exclusively to tournament participants
and supporters. There will also be a farewell
brunch on Sunday, starting at 11:00 a.m. at
an as-of-yet-disclosed location.
The tournament cost is free for any visi
tors from outside the Portland Metro Area.
NetRippers Members who have paid mem
bership dues for 2009 are also admitted at no
cost, while Portland Metro Non-Members
wishing to play in the tournament will be
charged $15. Brunch is the only event that
NetRippers F.C. anticipates that everyone
will need to pay for themselves.
Additionally, Thompson hopes people
who are interested in soccer and the club will
join the team on Saturdays at the Y M CA at
2831 SW Barbur Blvd.

Rose City Softball On for
Weekend Action Despite
Legal Self-Inspection
A June 27 meeting was held at the Jupi
ter Hotel Dreambox for the Rose City Soft-
ball Association to review the legal options
pertaining to whether or not the league is
in compliance with Oregon’s Public Ac
commodation law, particularly as with the
expanded definition o f sexual orientation
provided in Senate Bill 2 in 2007.
The R C SA recently eliminated the 2
heterosexual limitation rule in the RCSA’s
Open Division, which stated that only two
heterosexual participants be allowed per
team. The R C SA is Oregon’s largest gay
sports organization, whose primary focus is
on slow-pitch softball, for all persons, with
a special emphasis on the gay and lesbian
communities.
R C SA Open Commissioner Jake Packer,
and manager/coach o f the team “Thunder-
cats” and Committee Chair for this issue, as
nominated by the Open Division Managers
group Adrian Roberts, both reported that
the meeting was largely a preliminary affair,
with details on any course o f action being
deferred to a later date once all discussion
and legal counsel is reviewed.
“The logical first step is analyzing the le
gal aspect and determine whether the R CSA
must comply with SB 2,” said Roberts. “The
outcome o f that investigation will either
negate any future discussion about hetero
player limits by determining it to be illegal
discrimination, or provide the opportunity
to discuss whether such a limit should be al-
lowed/desired, should it be determined that
the R CSA does not fall under the umbrella
o f SB 2.”
While this situation develops, the R CSA
is continuing with some weekend softball
action.
On Friday, July 3, R C SA is hosting the
Broke Bat Home Run Derby and Shootout
at Buckman Field (N E Glisan and 16th) from
7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Softball players from all over
the west will vie to be home run king (or
