OREGON S GAY/LESBIAN/BI/TRANS NEWSMAGAZINE JULY 3 2009 39 J Ä VO IC E S Celebrate Good Times P ride N orthw est Brings Out th e Best Overcast skies kept the temperature down but certainly didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for the thousands o f revelers at last month’s Pride activities celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Kudos to the Pride North west committee for organizing the celebration, which gave me a chance to catch up with old friends and make lots of new ones. Coming a week earlier than usual, Pride coincided with the end of the school year for many, and Marc and I were privileged to begin the weekend’s festivities at the PSU graduation of our dear friend Noah C. Buck. Upon re ceiving his diploma, Young Noah stunned the crowd of 5,000 at the Rose Garden when he threw open his gown and revealed on the Jum- boTron he was wearing nothing but a Speedo swimsuit in the school’s bright green color. Others celebrating the conclusion o f academics were Andre Seminario, just graduated from U of Oregon with a degree in architecture, and Jarod Alford, who is studying music at PCC. Chris Sparks and Dan Querciagrossa were at Pride celebrating their one-year anni versary and the fact that “we have the best sex in the city.” The young couple recently moved in together atop Council Crest. Also celebrat ing an anniversary were Dee Scarborough and Laurie Huntwork (13 years). They told me OUT GOING bp Flo yd Sklaver that getting married in Multnomah County was one o f the happiest days o f their lives. Brian Langford was celebrating his own personal gay liberation. The singer, whom I know from the Portland Opera chorus, marched with the gay Mormon group for the first time. This was a very emotional undertak ing, as he just came out to his dad last year. I couldn’t have been prouder of him. Speaking of firsts, M att Folsom was very proud that there was a group marching under the banner o f O H SU for the first time. Matt calls himself Portland’s “Trambassador” be cause he’s the conductor at the lower terminal o f the riverfront tram, connecting the South Waterfront district with OHSU. Other firsts were marked by Tim Libra, Rich Altherr and Ben Furr, who were all celebrating their first Prides in Portland. Tim’s reaction: “There sure was a lot o f love.” After seven years as a dentist in Vancouver, 2 sively on marriage equality. “I don’t wanna get fucking married,” he told me, although he does want Basic Rights Oregon to begin captioning its videos so the hearing-impaired community can enjoy them as well. Tony Fuller, an HIV Prevention Coordinator in Eugene, thinks we should be refocusing our efforts toward HIV prevention for younger community members. He is frightened by some of the behavior he sees young men getting involved in - particu larly via the Internet - and feels the older com- ’ munity needs to set a better example. Speaking o f getting older, I came upon Roy Bowlin and Jam es Jackman as they laughed at the fact that they used to be intimidated by the cliques of some gay men when they were younger. “All those groups drifted apart; but we’re still here,” Roy said. James added that he loves Pride because it’s the one day each year “we come together and look at our history.” Actually, we’ll get another day this October, Raymond Frye was celebrating his first week when queers from around the nation gather to of business at Bling Dental in the Pearl. He march on Washington. Seattle’s Greg Scho- was amazed by the community’s response maker is chartering a bus for the cross-country when over 500 showed up for the opening. O f ride.
