Although
Pfeifer, who identifies as queer, has “subsequent
ly moved on to other relationships and experi
ences,” the spirit of that all-too-brief moment
of openness to further possibility—an opening
up of what “natural” could mean—lives on in
Natural Selection. Pfeifer’s evocative botany
expresses an inquisitive, open-minded and ulti
mately celebratory spirit, looking close enough
to see how nature is infinitely more diverse and
full of surprises than we often give it credit for.
On those terms, we humans, whatever our sex
ual orientation, can take comfort and delight in
being part of it.
