and the festival’s sponsorship coordinator and
president, Thomas outlined Curve’s requests as
“a booth with canopy and table, print ad in our
Pride Guide and perhaps hotel accommodations
the weekend of the festival.”
“It was shocking that they turned us down,”
said Keskula. “What we were asking for was not all
that ridiculous...compared to the value of what
we were planning on offering them.”
But Pride Northwest stands by its decision.
Renfrow said while the market rate of the sponsor
ship might be $7,500, the homegrown festival does
not see the value in advertising to a national mar
ket. “Everything they ask from us actually comes
out of our pocket. There’s a hard cost to us.”
According to Curve’s executive editor, Diane
Anderson-Minshall, Pride Northwest failed to see
what so many Pride festivals across the county
know: A quarter-million Curve readers can bring
tourism dollars to Portland Pride and the city in
general.
Keskula and Anderson-Minshall say they re
gret being left out of Portland Pride, where they
say they have a strong reader and writer base,
and where Anderson-Minshall has a home and
office. Still, they chose not to purchase a booth
at the festival.
“Everything we do is done through stra
tegic partnerships. If Portland Pride does
not want us there, we’ll be at San Jose Pride
instead that weekend. They are giving us a
booth and ad—everything that we wanted
because they see the value in what we are of
fering," said Keskula.
Anderson-Minshall also referenced the
cost of flying a staff and magazines to Portland
Pride in addition to paying for a booth as cost-
prohibitive.
Neither representatives of the festival nor
the magazine believe this year sets precedent
for future relationships. Thomas indicated in
the letter to Keskula, “We would love to revisit
the opportunity to advertise with your magazine
next year.”
Keskula said Curve would “absolutely” con
sider returning to Portland Pride. “It’s always
been a very successful festival for us. Portland
has a wonderful community of Curve readers,
supporters and staff. In spite of this decision,
I think we would still come up again.”
BRO Wants You to Eat Out
After winding down from Pride Weekend,
Basic Rights Oregon wants you to have a good
meal, or three.
The ninth annual Bites for Rights is June 19,
and a generous array of restaurants, nightclubs,
delicatessens and coffee shops from around the
state are participating. You can help raise money
for BRO by patronizing any of the participating es
tablishments, which will donate 15 percent of their
day’s gross proceeds.
