That event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 3. “We as a community often joke that we do things ‘for the children’ at our events,” Brown said in an e-mail to his friends. “Well, here is your chance to prove it.” The barbecue will be free and open to the entire community, according to Brown. “The young people of SMYRC have re peatedly asked for more groups to come for ward and meet with them, and Coral and I believe that this would be a great opportunity to do so,” he said. “It is high time that the next generation meet the current crop of community leaders, board members and title holders from the area. What better way to do this than by breaking bread, so to speak.” Since 1998 SMYRC has created safety and support for queer youth in Oregon through empowerment, community building, education and direct services. It is a program of nonprofit Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare, the state’s largest provider of community based mental health and addictions treat ment services. SMYRC provides a safe, supervised, ha rassment-free and alcohol- and drug-free space for members of the sexual minorities community who are 23 and younger. Youth gather to participate in positive activities like art, music, community organizing, de velopment, education, peer support, support groups, case management, counseling and job readiness preparation.
