Poison Waters Honored
for Community Work
Beloved Portlander Kevin Cook and his popu
lar drag alteT ego, Poison Waters, will receive the
2008 José Honor Award.
Named for the founder of the Imperial Court
System, Her Imperial Majesty Absolute Empress I
José, The Widow Norton, this award was created to
recognize nationally those who have exhibited
excellence in community involvement.
The International Court System has honored
many individuals and courts since the inception of
the José Honors in 1997. Recipients are selected
among nominated representatives of local chapters
of the Imperial Court System throughout North
America.
The goals of the court are to further relationships
with businesses and organizations within its local
communities, to hold functions and raise money to
benefit the communities and to help those in the
community who are in need of assistance.
In 2001, Cook was elected the 44th Rose
Empress of the Imperial Sovereign
Rose Court. This year marks the 20th
anniversary of drag diva Poison
Waters. Cook has volunteered and
raised money for countless nonprofit
organizations. Most recently, his phi
lanthropy was directed toward chil
dren affected by AIDS at Camp
Starlight.
The José Honor Award Selection
Committee was impressed by the 54
letters of recommendation included in
Cook’s nomination packet, anchored
by personal letters from Portland City
Commissioners Sam Adams and Dan
Saltzman, Mayor Tom Potter and
Multnomah County Commissioner
Maria Rojo de Steffey. Also presented
were e-mails of support from Oregon
Gov. Barbara Roberts and drag icon
Darcelle XV,
who was Rose
Empress XV in 1973 and is a 1999
recipient of the José Honor Award.
The 10th José Honors Award Dinner
place April 18 in Denver.
Kevin Cook, aka Poison Waters, will join the ranks of
Darcelle XV when he receives the 2008 José Honor

Gay Dems Take Office
“There’s always been a consciousness within the
GLBT movement," said KC Hanson, the
Multnomah County Democrats’ newly elected
chairwoman. “If you look back historically, even
before Stonewall, GLBT folks were always part of
significant progressive movements—suffrage, civil
rights, etc.—but we weren’t so ‘out.’ ”
What has changed is that queers are taking on
a much more visible role in the state and county
Democratic Party. Since the fall of 2007, many of
Oregon’s political organizers took leadership roles
within the party.
Kristin Flickinger is the Democratic Party of
Oregon’s GLBT Caucus chairwoman.
Joey Kerns is chairman of the Multnomah
County Democrats’ GLBT Caucus.
Frank Dixon was elected vice chairman of the
Democratic Party of Oregon.
