Strike a Pose
“Gutterly Ridiculous” rolled into first place early in the 30th annual season of
the Portland Community Bowling Association and at midseason continues to
lead the pack of high rollers. Team member Tom Lutes Jr. is the only bowler to
roll a perfect 300 game so far this season.
The league was begun back in 1978 by founder Tom Giel, the only bowler to
have bowled continually for all 30 years. “I’ve maintained a master list of every
person who ever bowled, from most of the early bar owners from the ’70s and ’80s
to (Imperial Sovereign] Rose Court titleholders, Emperors and Empresses to leather
groups, [Portland] Gay Men’s Chorus members and friends from the Northwest
Gender Alliance,” he says. “Over 30 years I’ve gotten to know such a wide cross
section of our community, and I’m so thankful for the time we’ve shared.”
Giel indicates that the list of bowlers is approaching the 2,500 mark. The mid-
to late ’80s was the high point for gay league bowling, he adds. “One season we
had so many bowlers—300—that we had to run three sessions, filling all 36 lanes
at Pro 300 on Powell.”
Sadly, Giel points out that it was during that time that the league was deci
mated by AIDS, losing more than 100 bowlers in the coming years. “We still
maintain a memorial list of those bowlers who are no longer with us.”
The league Kiwis in half seasons to allow more options for bowlers who have
busy community schedules. Anyone can join at any time. But the second half and
official 30th anniversary rolls out at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 6, 2008. Keeping with tradi
tion, Giel says’gay Portland City Commissioner (and mayoral candidate) Sam
Adams will roll out the first ball. In years past, Mayor Bud Clark, Police Chief
Tom Potter and even Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongski have appeared at the lanes.
New bowlers can join teams on the opening day by arriving early at 2:30 p.m.
Each season-half commitment is only 14 sessions. The league continues to maintain
a weekly fee of only $10, the lowest for any league in the city: For more information
on joining in January, interested participants can call league administrator Mike
Nelson at 503-693-6261 or check out the Web site www.pdxbowl.com.
