Africa AIDS Response is a program of the
Portland-Mutare Sister City Associa
tion, which provides direct financial
support to grassroots AIDS efforts in
Zimbabwe in a city-to-city effort. It
estimates that 15 million Africans have
died of AIDS since the beginning of
the epidemic and that more than 25
million are living with the infection.
According to the organization, one in
four adults in Zimbabwe is infected
with the AIDS virus.
This is one reason for the part
nership between Portland and the
Zimbabwean village of Mutare. Mutare
is on the border of Mozambique and
serves as Zimbabwe’s “gateway to the
sea." It has been Portland’s sister city
since 1991. Through the years, Port
landers have helped supported a much-
needed clinic as well as primary and
secondary schools in the region and
have assisted villagers who want to
learn new agricultural techniques. Visit
