Voice Carries
With Silverado poised to leave its
current home, is this the end of
Portland's gay district as we know it?
ou may have heard Theresa
Mitchell’s voice on KBOO-FM
Thursday mornings, revealing
“all the news you’re not supposed
to know” on her long-running
public affairs program, Presswatch. Although •
the show focuses on news from around the
globe, Mitchell often takes the time to talk
about trans issues, explaining why her voice
might sound androgynous to callers unfamil
iar with her show. Mitchell, who is a former
TriMet employee, is focusing on her media
projects while she looks for full-time work.
The Texas native recently self-published
a hxik called Jeezus, a panxly of the popular
Left Behind series, and she is working on
a follow-up novel.

Community Organizations for Reform Now] office, and I can’t
remember his name. He was cute.
My first job was stocking Birdseye Frozen Ftxxls at the Fort
Sam Houston commissary.
My vice is surfing the Internet.
1 like to spend my down time playing the flute. 1 like to write
novels. 1 like to drink with friends at the Doug Fir.
My proudest moment was a standing ovation for playing the
Khaturian flute concerto.

She’s a musician. She used to be Walter Carlos. She’s a genius.
The last queer or philanthropic event I participated in was
the Pickathon [Roots Music Festival].
My biggest challenge is making enough money to live.
A perfect day in Portland would be spent bird watching in
Forest Park.
My highest hope for the cause is I’d like to see people treat
ed equally, basically.
