Tattle Tale
Should I expose a liar?
D ear M s . B ehavior :
I was at a party recently where we
played What’s the Worst Thing You Ever Did,
a drinking game in which people went around
the room confessing secrets.
Ella, a friend of a friend, confessed that she
lied on a government application to get a
grant. Most people confessed silly or ridiculous
secrets, but this woman clearly broke the law
and acted unethically. 1 feel like it is my Juty
to tell someone (e.g., the organization that
gave her the grant), but my girlfriend says 1
should just let it go. Worse is that we are like
ly to end up in social situations with this liar, and 1 will be forced to be nice to her.
What is the etiquette here? Am 1 bound by the fellowship of the game and the
party to keep her lousy secret?
—Uneasy
D ear U neasy :
Perhaps Ella’s lie prevented someone more deserving from receiving the grant,
but unless the game was called “Tattletale” or “Snitch,” you should not run to the
government agency and complain. Ella’s misdeed is hardly admirable, but it’s not
like she admitted to selling babies or torturing puppies, is it?
Unless someone reveals that he or she intends to hurt someone, the implicit
understanding of such games is that secrets will not be revealed to others after the
party. Would you expect someone to snitch about your secret? What if someone
told your ex-girlfriend that you once sat on another woman’s face by accident while
you were still dating? Maybe you’re so good and pure that you’ve never made a lit
tle mistake. But you should know that telling on others doesn’t make your good
ness more substantial.
Only you know whether you can bear to be nice to Ella in a social situation.
But if His Holiness the Dalai Lama is your model for kindness, you should proba-
bly at least deign to say hello.
'
D ear M s . B ehavior :
Our good friends Miriam and Dora are inseminating, as are we. The problem is
that they are using the same sperm bank we are, and they are also going to go for
Jewish sperm like we are, which limits the pool even further.
1 am afraid we will end up with the same donor, since we have similar tastes and
values. Do you think it’s invasive for us to ask them to coordinate with us, so that
our children don’t end up having the same father? 1 have a specific donor in mind
already, and 1 don’t want them to sign up for the same one. It seems weird and
unboundaried to leave it to chance.
No one else seems to be the least bit worried about this. How can 1 bring the
topic up without seeming like a total control freak?
—Big Mama
D ear B ic ; M ama :
You haven’t said why it bothers you to use the same sperm as your friends. If
you’re concerned that your spawn will grow up and marry a nearby half-brother or
half-sister, subsequently giving birth to mutant babies, it’s not likely. Should such
a melodrama arise, you’d simply reveal the horrible truth, just as parents do in a
soap opera. (Actually, if you feel compelled to protect against inadvertent incest,
you’ll need to ban your child from ever having sex with anyone with unknown
birth parents.)
You probably can’t broach the topic of coordinating sperm donors without
seeming like a total control freak, because, well, you are a total control freak. But
it’s time for self-examination: Why are you so possessive of a particular sperm
donor, given the impersonal context of insemination? It’s not as if the donor is your
boyfriend and Miriam and Dora want to extract his semen doggie style. Are you
the kind of person who gets upset if, say, you have a yellow house and your neigh
bor paints her house yellow, or a friend buys shoes like your shoes? Is your need for
control particular to spwge? Or are you just competitive with your friends?
Your partner is right; you should try to let it go. But if you really feel the need
to direct the situation, then findjout which sperm donor Miriam and Dora plan to
use and pick someone else. It’s a more effective solution than attempting to ban
them from using your dream donor. •
