Is Marriage Christian?
Is same-sex marriage a Christian value? Watch
as speakers Todd Miles and the Rev. Wesley
Mullins debate the issue 7 p.m. Jan. 22 at Oregon
State University’s Austin Auditorium, 875 S.W.
26th St. in Corvallis.
Miles, assistant professor of theology at Western
Seminary in Portland, will argue that Gcxl has estab
lished marriage between a man and a woman as the
defining sexual relationship. Mullins, assistant pastor
of Metropolitan Community Church of Portland,
will argue that marriage is a basic human right, an
individual choice and something that same-sex
couplescan experience as a gift from God.
The debate is hosted by the university’s
StKratic Club’s. The club offers a forum for oppos
ing points of view on subjects of contemporary
debate at the intersection of Christian belief and
contemporary culture. For more information visit

College Recognizes Chorus
The Portland Gay Men’s Chorus will be
honored with the Urban Pioneer award from
Portland State University’s College of Urban and
Public Affairs.
Urban Pioneer awards honor leaders that exhib
it many of the ideals taught to students and valued
by the college’s faculty and community partners.
The chorus is the fourth-oldest gay-identified
chorus in the nation. Since 1980, it has worked to
promote social justice to affirm the worth of all
people. Known for its musical excellence as well as
its outreach, the group inspires leadership within
the gay community and is an active partner in the
regional arts.
Community outreach is especially important to
the chorus. By using music as a medium to address
philosophical and social barriers, its concerts
become tools in the effort to spread important
messages about diversity. The chorus has demon
strated dedication to reaching the broadest
audience possible, performing special concerts
throughout both urban and rural Oregon. More
than 100 men and women are members of the
chorus, and membership is open to anyone who
supports its mission and vision.
“The gay men’s chorus has been a pioneer in
fighting discrimination,” said Lawrence Wallack,
dean of the college. “Their main weapons have
