My best friend, Rod, is about to sign up to be
in a gay pom movie. Are there things he should
know before signing on the dotted line? 1 told him
to think about it, but he is too impulsive and
wants the money. Some of his friends have done
it, so it seems harmless and fun to him. It doesn’t
seem harmless to me. 1 don’t want to see him rush
into something that he might later regret. What

There are a lot of things Rod should know
before agreeing to be in a pom video, but it’s unlikely that he’ll hear them because at
the moment he undoubtedly thinks that fucking and sucking on celluloid (or the digi
tal equivalent) is extremely glamorous, especially since his friends have done it and their
penises probably kxik huge on a large screen.
There aren’t any legal protections for people who act in low-budget porno videos. Rod
should read his contract, which will undoubtedly be designed to protect only the produc
er and his interests. If Rod has any questions, he should bring them to a lawyer so that he
knows what rights he’s giving away.
Unfortunately, the issues that worry you (and Ms. Behavior) probably don’t actually
concern R<xl. For example, R<xl probably isn’t thinking about how a little on-film fisting
might affect a future career in politics, media or education. He probably figures that very
few people will see his video. This isn’t tme; in fact, Rixl should assume that the video will
potentially be available to everyone he knows and will ever know in the future. Pom videos
have no expiration date and never really go out of circulation. If Rod or anyone else in the
video ever becomes famous for any reason at all, the video could resurface at any point in
the future. And from now on, anytime a date says, “1 can’t figure out how I know you,” Rod
will wonder if it’s from Starbucks or from the golden shower scene in the movie.

I work in a laid-back environment with a mixture of straight and gay people. I’m out
at work, and no one cares.
Mindy, one of the hyper PR lesbians here, walks in every morning with her big buck
et of coffee and her doughnuts and says as she passes my desk, “Good morning, Faggy!’’
You don’t see me responding rudely, even though it would be easy, because she has one
of those weird lesbian hairstyles—long in the back and short on top—and she has no
fashion sense. She actually wears big old rainbow shawls and Timberland boots to work.
Maybe she thinks that calling me “Faggy” is cute and just teeming with camaraderie.
But here’s a news flash: Homosexual professional gentlemen do not like being called
FAGGY! I want to tell her as much, but I’m wondering what to say. Can you write me
a script?

You’re probably tempted to start with something like: “Listen up, you annoying, carpet
munching, mullet-wearing lezzie. Why don’t you go back to the wixxls and chant in a
circle with your sisters and spare the rest of us.”
But really, Bill, that would not be very loving or compassionate, and it reeks of a
certain kind of internalized homophobia, the same way it does when she calls you
“Faggy.” So, you could try something gentle like: “Mindy, I appreciate your trying to
establish that we’re on the same ream, but couldn’t we just do that with a covert glance
or a secret curtsy? Or might we flash our pinkie rings at each other, like queers did in
the 1950s, back in the days when sexual orientation was private?”
Of course, Mindy is probably trying to be out and proud and she might not have any
sense of humor at all, so your playful suggestion of something clandestine will probably
stimulate her political feelings regarding being closeted and cause her a big, hairy cri
sis. So why not stick to something safer like, “Mindy, it bugs me when you call me
’Faggy,’ so please don’t do it.”
If it turns out that Mindy really needs a sense of camaraderie based on your shared
queemess, maybe you can offer to let her call you a private nickname that is based on a
secret language between the two of you. So when she passes by with her doughnuts and
says, “Good morning, Monkey,” only you and she will know that “Gixxl morning” really
means “You're very hunky,” and “Monkey” means “Scxlomizer.” ©
