Critics Compare Troubadour to Dylan, Lennon, Mitchell
Sonia has nine award-winning albums to her credit and is popular in 10 countries around the world, including Australia
and The Netherlands. Since 1998 she has performed at major music festivals from Stockholm, Sweden, to Vancouver, British
Columbia.
In April 2005 Sonia reformed her band, Disappear Fear, featuring Laura Cerulli on percussion and harmonies. Last
summer they went on tour across the United States in support of their CD, DF05 Live, performing at many Pride festivals
along the way. Sonia has received several Gay/Lesbian American Music Awards and a Grammy nomination for her ninth
CD, No Bomb Is Smart.
Ken Knox of Frontier News Magazine raves: “If there was a modern-day female contemporary of Boh Dylan, one would not
need to look any further than [Sonia). The underrated (and out lesbian) singer-songwriter’s acoustic compositions are often
as urgent in their impassioned earnestness as the most important work in Dylan’s canon.”
Ari Schwartz of The Rock and Roll Journal says Bomb “expresses the brutal, terrifying, authentic, beautiful and real values
of the world we live in. This album is truly magical; it evokes the bravery and wisdom of John Lennon and the musical genius
of Joni Mitchell."
Born Sonia Rutstein, the contemporary troubadour croons folk songs about romantic love, often forbidden. She recently
spent two weeks in Israel—before and after the ceasefire—traveling mostly through central Israel but also venturing to the
south and then the north, “where the bombs were." This was her fourth trip to Israel and her third tour there, the previous
two in 1999 and 2005.
“I have people that I love there,” Sonia says. “I did a concert in a miklat, a bomb shelter. Some shoot bullets and missiles;
what I put into the air is music. When I named the band Disappear Fear, it wasn’t a whim."
Among her new projects, Sonia has written the soundtrack for Autumn Harvest, a short documentary chronicling the life
of an HIV-positive migrant worker. She also has two CDs under way: a blues album and a disc of songs in Spanish, Hebrew
and Arabic.
