Denial Ain't Just
a River in Egypt
Cheater's girlfriend needs to pull
her head out of the sand
D ear M s . B ehavior :
I don’t know what to believe about my girlfriend,
Diane, so please give me your opinion. Here’s what
happened last weekend: I go to pick up my dog from
my friend Angela, who’s been dog-sitting. Angela isn’t
home, so 1 search her bedrixim for a pen to leave a
thank-you note. To my surprise, 1 find Diane’s old
glasses on Angela’s bedside table. Still no pen, so 1
keep searching. 1 notice Diane’s old college T-shirt on
Angela’s desk chair. Eventually, 1 find Diane’s vibra
tor in the bedside drawer. (A few years ago, when she
had housemates, Diane wrote her initials with nail
polish on the bottom of Mr. Wand.)
1 call Diane and ask what her glasses, shirt and vibrator are doing in Angela’s bedrixim.
Diane says she has no idea. So I call Angela, who confesses that she is secretly in love with
Diane and stole these items so she could feel closer to Diane. 1 think this is so bizarre that
it must be true. I have to trust Dane, right? My friends think she's a liar. What do you think ?
—Diane’s Girlfriend
D ear D iane ’ s G irlfriend :
Your search for a pen was an excuse, which means you were already suspicious. But
once you found clues, you chose to deny them. You’d rather believe that Angela came
over and rifled through Diane’s drawers, then went home and constructed a mini-shrine
in her bedroom. You never question how she came upon the vibrator; might you believe
that Diane innocently left it on the kitchen table, and Angela merely slipped it into her
purse or her vagina when no one was looking?
Denial serves the purpose of protecting you from that which is too difficult to
know—but only to a point. Maybe you need to believe that Diane hasn’t betrayed you.
Maybe if you walked into Angela’s house and Angela was naked on the dining room
table with Diane’s fingers inside her, Diane could convince you that she was giving
Angela a pelvic exam because she’s concerned about Angela’s health.
You need to face up to the truth and then decide what you want to do about it. Can
you tolerate it? Do you want an open relationship? Is Diane willing to tell the truth and
stop seeing Angela? Are you ready to find a new dog sitter?
D ear M s . B ehavior :
1 recently ended a long relationship. Things have changed during the 12 years I was
out of circulation. Now it’s easy to meet people online, and lots of women are looking
for sex without commitment, which is fine with me because I’m gun-shy after my
breakup. So, I’ve dated five different women during the past several months.
My dilemma is about body hair. Two of the women I’ve met are into Brazilian wax
ing. One of them, Heather, wants to take me to the place where she gets waxed and pay
for me to try it. I’m always up for a fun outing, but 1 don’t know how I feel about the
totally hairless kx>k on me. 1 like it on her, and it’s nice to go down on someone who is
totally smooth. I’d consider getting waxed to please Heather, but since Heather and 1
aren't serious, 1 worry about how other women will respond. Will some women be turned
off? 1 don’t have anyone 1 can ask about this, and I figured you would know.
—New to This Stuff
D ear N ew to T his S tuff :
It’s generally worth the extra effort to do something that your sex partner finds erotic.
Her response will be rewarding, and you might find that you actually have more sensation
without hair. Even if it turns out that you don't like the way it looks or feels, you won’t have
to live with it for long; pubic hair generally grows hack in about a month. Meanwhile, if
the next person in your long line of trysts happens not to like it, she doesn’t have to come
rack for seconds.
Some women may be reminded of prepubescent girls when they see your hairless
mound, which could squash their desire, at least for 30 days. But others will undoubt
edly find your smtxith pudenda irresistible and will want you constantly. They'll touch
you under the table in restaurants and drag you into cars and alleyways, unable to con
tain the urge to lick and fuck you. They will do it over and over, amazed by the easy
access, the unencumbered sweet and slick juiciness.
Either way, if this is what you mean by a fun outing (as opposed to, say, a museum or
a poetry reading), you're sure to have a lovely time. •
