Portland Community Media Supports Queer Programming
Mayor Tom Potter has designated Nov. 13 to 18 as Community Media Week, celebrating 25 years of
locally produced community broadcast media. Portland Community Media (PCM), formerly called
Portland Cable Access, was established by city ordinance in 1981 to provide public, educational and gov
ernment television broadcasting. Two of its programs are produced by members of the sexual minorities
community.
International Foundation for Alternative Research in AIDS has had a show on PCM for the past six
years. Treatment Information Exchange pro
vides up-to-date information about
H1V/A1DS research and medication as well
as personal stories from people living with
the disease. Fred Schaich, who is HIV-posi
tive, has been with the organization for the
past 16 years and hosts the show each week.
He is also PCM’s newest board member.
“The broadest, most important part is to
get the patient's view,” says Schaich, who is
gay. “We try to get people on to explain how
they live with a disease.” Past guests on the
show include President Bill Clinton and
actor Richard Gere, as well as heads of state
and health ministries from different coun
tries around the world.
Dawn Higgins hosts Galactic Groove
After Dark, another queer-themed show on
PCM. The “proud, out bisexual woman” has
been on the public network for the past five
years.
“At first my show was going to be a big,

be a female Dick Clark, but it was so hard to
get people to dance in the studio that 1 changed my format,” Higgins explains. The show follows a late-
night talk show structure, with musical guests, drag queens and B-movie actors as guests.
“It’s really cool to see how PCM has grown and changed just in the five years that I’ve been a
producer,” says Higgins. She will be one of several volunteers featured in the Producer's Showcase screen
ing 7 p.m. Nov. 14 at 2766 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. This event and many others during
Community Media Week are free and open to the public. For more information go to www.pcmtv.org.
Treatment Information Exchange airs 10 a.m. Sundays on Channel 23, 10 p.m. Mondays on Channel 11
and 9 p.m. Fridays on Channel 22. Galactic Groove After Dark airs 8 p.m. Wednesdays on Channel 22,
11 p.m. Thursdays on Channel 23 and midnight Sundays on Channel 11.
