In a Bind
How do I diplomatically divulge to dykes
that I dabble with dick?
D ear M s . B ehavior :
I am single and open and having fun with lots of
different people right now. I’m giving myself a year
or two before I’d consider getting into another
serious relationship.
Although 1 label myself a 100 percent dyke, one
of my current playmates is a straight guy. It’s not a big
deal; I think of Jake as another flavor that 1 happen [o
enjoy. He’s cool and easy to be with and always ready
for sex. 1 don’t even have to talk if I don’t want to. We
have no ties to each other, so it’s fun.
The problem is that some of my other playmates
think it’s nasty that 1 see Jake regularly for sex. 1 don’t
want to stop seeing him. Generally, I’m not into lying.
So, can you think of a way that I can tell the ladies that I sometimes cozy up to dick
that would help them accept it? (We always use a condom, so STDs aren’t an issue.) It
seems to be putting a damper on my love life.
—Playing the Field
D ear P laying the F ield :
You might think of Jake as one big, juicy low-maintenance sex toy, but the other
lesbians in your life won’t be so generous. They’ll view him as an actual hairy, grunting
man—perhaps transformed in their imagination into the worst possible horror: a corporate
creep or a caveman, whichever they believe is worse—which will make them uncomfort
able, because if you have sex with him, that means you’re a lesbian who is not like them,
and what does that do to their definition of lesbians?
Worse still, maybe you actually are like them, which might indicate that they could
still harbor a secret desire to sleep with men, too, in some tiny, deep pocket of their
souls. How threatening! Some might find it necessary to disown you, to drown you, to
extinguish you from the sisterhood.
,
But you asked if you should tell your female playthings that you have sex with a man.
Well, it seems only fair to tell any sexual partner whether or not you’re having sex with
other people, but there’s no reason to specify gender. If, however, a female date asks you
directly, perhaps because she’s heard through the rumor mill that you’re a penis hound, you
shouldn’t lie and pretend that you don’t have sex with men. If you’re lucky, you’ll find an
occasional dyke who’ll actually be aroused by the thought of you sitting on a dick.
Undoubtedly, Ms. Behavior will get e-mails from bisexuals, insisting that because
you enjoy sex with Jake you’re actually bisexual and should face up to it. However, your
lack of romantic feelings for Jake coupled with your having clearly defined yourself as a
lesbian is good enough for Ms. Behavior. So, listen up, lovely bisexuals: Occasionally
dykes do sleep with men!
D ear M s . B ehavior :
1 recently took a job with an advertising agency in a large building, on the 64th floor.
Every morning on the elevator, several women from other floors flirt with me. My friends
think this is hilarious, since 1 am a gay man and always have been.
I am out at my job and generally in my life, but 1 do not see fit to “come out” during
a 45-second elevator ride. My friends say that this means 1 am closeted and that my
smiling at these women and talking with them without letting them know I’m gay
means I’m homophobic. What do you think?
—Elevator Man
D ear E levator M an :
It would be presumptuous to preemptively shout: “I’m gay! I’m gay! I love to suck
cock!” to every woman who smiles at you in the elevator.
It sounds like you’re perceived as cute and nonthreatening by this gaggle of flirting
women. This means your clueless friends are probably incorrect to assume the elevator
women believe you’re available. In fact, it’s quite likely that they're flirting with you
because you're gay.
Here's a news flash, in case your friends have been living under a big gay boulder for the
past decade: Straight women actually like gay men! They want to be friends with gay men!
Most straight women who’ve never even seen Will Grace have always wanted their own
Will. You probably seem sweet enough to qualify, which is a compliment to you.
So, no, it doesn’t sound like you’re suffering from internalized homophobia. But if you
feel compelled to prove it, you could always offer to wear a pair of Spandex culottes, sing
Liza’s greatest hits and kiss one of your male friends the whole way up to the 64th flwr. ©
