NoPo Shows Pride
Residents build community

gathering of North Portland residents, political
candidates and congregants gathered Aug. 13 at
University Park United Methodist Church to
show pride not just for sexual minorities but for
the neighborhood.
“Lets have a picnic and spend time creating community
right here in North Portland," the.Rev. Dr. Jeanne Knepper
told the audience.
A handful of booths, vendors and speakers dotted the
lawn at the second annual North Portland Pride Barbecue
and Festival. Attendees feasted on picnic fare and were treat
ed to a smooth performance by local favorite Sneakin’ Out.
Out and allied candidates for public office shook hands
and enjoyed the community atmosphere. Openly gay City
Commissioner Sam Adams addressed rhe crowd to recap
advancements made in the queer civil rights movement and
plans to improve the district, known for its historic land
marks, diversity and welcoming atmosphere. e
