The 1,300-square-foot space at 1132 S.E. Salmon St. offers Portland pooches a large pool, a grassy area, two large rooms (one each for small and big dogs) and a masseuse! Owners Janel Hanson and Ellie Davis, who also own a couple of restaurants in town, opened the doors of Dogs Dig It doggie day care July 1. “It’s been a dream of mine for the past five years,” says small, comfortable place where they can really get a feel for Portland. You have friends who are moving here and need a place to stay while they look around for the perfect house. You need not look further than the Portland Internation al Guesthouse at 2185 N.W. Flanders St. Owners and partners for more than 18 years, Thomas Winston Morgan and Stephen Oringdulph have been propri etors of the guest house for a year. “It had always been a dream of ours to own a small, manageable, European-sryle guesthouse,” says Morgan. Morgan, Oringdulph and their assistant live on site in the 1908 craftsman. The guesthouse has five bed-and-breakfast-like private rooms that share two full bathrooms. business! watch Home Away from Home You’ve got relatives coming to town who want to go out and explore while you’re at work. Your commitment ceremony is a few months away, and you want to put up your out-of-town guests in a MARTY DAVIS Hanson. “I just haven’t had the financing till now.” Hanson got her dog, Bella, six years ago from the Medford Humane Society. “My goals changed ever since 1 got her,” she says. Now you can find Hanson playing with the dogs during their very busy days. “We open at 7 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. There’s lots of playtime in the morning, a nap in the after noon, some swim time after that, and then lots more play time.” The philosophy behind day care for dogs is profound and moving in its simplicity. Instead of leaving your dog to sit around at home, allow them the social ization, mental stimulation and exercise they need throughout the day. At Dogs Dig It, you can rest assured your pup is getting it ail. As Hanson puts it, “We want to ensure a better, healthier life for your dog.” “It’s very much like a pension you might find in Europe," says Morgan. “All types of people stay hère. Quite a few LGBT folks, a lot of internation al travelers and people who want a place that is reasonable and centrally located." According to Morgan, guesthouses are meant to be in residential areas. “We’re one block to Northwest 23rd Avenue and one block to Northwest 21st Avenue, which are replete with things to see and restaurants.” Tired of places always calling themselves “gay-friendly,” Morgan refers to the guesthouse as “gay-owned and hetero-friendly.” It is also environ mentally friendly, he adds, dedicated to sustainable practices. So the next time you want to put people up in Portland, put them up in Portland. As Morgan explains, “In a big hotel, you could he anywhere in the world.” And Your Little Dog, Too! Pat Jeung has been around the block. Actually, he’s been around the world in search of new flavors and recipes to bring home to Portland’s Chameleon, 2000 N.E. 40th Ave. He travels overseas twice a year to get ideas. But his newest idea, a dog-friend ly patio, is definitely locally inspired. “We have an outside patio where people can bring their dog and have dinner because there aren’t many places where you can do that," says Jeung. “I realized a lot of my friends have dogs, and they want to come by for dinner.” If Portland is a town of dog owners (and it is), The Portland International Guesthouse offers gay-owned and hetero friendly accommodations. Chameleon owner and chef Pat Jeung dishes out treats for customers and pooches alike on the restaurant's new patio. When the “cheating” details came out after their breakup...
