Sister Act
How should I approach my brothers
about donating sperm?
D ear M s . B ehavior :
My partner, Sherri, and 1 hope to Ret my two
younger Brothers to donate their sperm to us,
which we’d use to impregnate Sherri this year.
The problem is that we don’t know how to
ask them. They are nice boys, ages 17 and 19,
and they adore and kx>k up to me as their older,
wiser sister.
Should we appeal to them as straight men
who can help lesbians have a family? Should we
beg? Sherri thinks it’s problematic, and our
friend keeps saying it’s incest. It isn’t technically
incest, is it?
—Big Sister
D ear B io S ister :
If your brothers aren’t eager participants, you mustn’t try to strong-arm them into
handing over their juices. It’s easy to see the appeal of using relatives for your reproduc
tive task, but not if it requires wielding power over them—even the power of your
sisterly persuasion.
If, however, one of your brothers gets teary-eyed at the thought of donating spooge
to needy lesbians, don’t break out the Cosmopolitans just yet. Give him a chance to
think about it (say, at least a month), and encourage him to discuss it with a therapist.
It might seem like a cautious approach, but the decision to father a child with whom
he’ll likely have contact is one that merits thoughtfulness. It’s not as if your brother
would be jerking off into a cup for a random stranger at a sperm bank, who would know
him only by number. Even if responsibility for the child would lie with you and Sherri,
your brother’s participation might be life-changing for him.
If one of your brothers does father your child, it wouldn’t be considered incest. Still,
the brother-as-father scenario might result in weird family dynamics, particularly if you
fail to construct a written agreement detailing your sperm donor’s involvement.
Mort people decline to use written agreements in dealing with people they trust (like
family members) for fear of offending them. But clarity of intention with a family mem
ber is even more important than it would be with a stranger; you have much more at
•stake. If one of your brothers agrees to donate to your cause, be sure to have a written
and signed document, explicitly stating his role with the child.
For example, will your brother be considered a parent, or do you intend to assign him
the role of “uncle"? Will he have any financial responsibility for the child? Will he have
visitation rights? Will he try to claim custody if anything should happen to your partner?
Consult with a lawyer before drafting your document. Your agreement might not be
legally binding if a judge determines it doesn’t serve the best interests of the child.
However, if anything goes wrong, it may be used to demonstrate the intentions of all
parties at the time the agreement was made.
In‘any case, Sherri’s view of the arrangement as problematic should be considered,
discussed and resolved before you approach your brothers with a Tupperware container
and a copy of Hustler magazine.
D ear M s . B ehavior :
1 have a huge crush on my massage therapist, Bob, who 1 see weekly. 1 think about
him all the time and imagine being with him. I suspect that he likes me, too, but he has
clear boundaries and probably wouldn’t express interest in a client.
Should I ask Bob on a date, or would that put him in an awkward position? What
if it makes it difficult for us to even continue the massages? I don’t know what to do.
1 rarely meet anyone I want to date.
—Frank
D ear F rank :
You need to assess your risk tolerance: Are you willing to sacrifice an hour of week
ly pleasure with Bob for the possibility of having his whole enchilada? Have you ever
watched the game show Deal or No Deal! Let’s try to quantify it by saying that the
weekly massage relationship you have now is worth $5,000, hut the sleeping-in-the-
same-bed-and-mutual-sodomy relationship is worth $1 million. If you decide to try for
the suitcase with the massage therapist, inform Bob that you’re terminating your
massage relationship so that you can ask him on a date. You’ll know by his reaction
whether you’ve blown the small prize in pursuit of The Big One. •
