ust Out judges perceived Jeffrey Horvitz’s shot,
“Hands,” as an optical illusion. Depending on the
viewer’s gaze, some noticed the sharply foe used
hands with visible skin tonalities, while others
were immediately drawn to the package.
“The crotch shot is part of it, but it’s thrown out of focus,
so the real focus is the hands,” said Horvitz. “It’s kind of a
sexy shot at the same time.”
Horvitz moved to Portland from San Francisco, where he
was an art student. He relocated “just for a change” and to
become a better photographer.
“It was just awesome that 1 won something, because it
shows me that this is the direction 1 really need to be focus­
ing my energy on,” he said.
“Hands” was photographed as part of a series on body
parts.
“1 thought of throwing in the out-of-focus underwear line
to break it up, but the real focus is the skin tone and the
hands,” said Horvitz, 46. “I thought it worked well because
of the depth of field.”
Regardless of perspective, the photo exudes masculine
sensuality applied by a capable, queer eye. ©
