After months of searching for a location, 3rd
Girl Designs opened Portland’s only gay pride
store Feb. 3.
What started as a booth at
Portland Pride has expanded
into a boutique of rainbow gear,
all year round. Besides attire,
costume jewelry and some home
items, the shop shows art on
consignment from local gay and
lesbian artists.
The store strives to carry a variety of items not
found in other shops tn Portland. This is achieved
through shopping at local stores and expos and
over the Internet.
The people behind 3rd Girl are
co-owners Kay Long and Maggie
Wilson and business associate
Cecil Lasure.
“I don’t want to be the store
that has a two-foot pride section.
I want the pride to be overflow
ing,” said Long, a third-generation
Portlander.
Long, who is bisexual, said she
hopes the store will become a
landmark for Portland’s queer
community. The store is arranged
as a comfortable meeting spot and
place to visit and pick up the cur
rent issue of Just Out.
“We just want to promote that
Portland is a livable city. It’s a pos
itive community where everyone is
accepted for who they are,” she
said.
Long says she believes in giving
back to the community and fre Ellie Jaramillo, owner of Open & Out Salon in Milwaukie,

Jaramillo says her clientele is a mix of queer,
creative, artistic types and other folks vested in the
suburban community.
“It’s open to whomever or
whatever walks through the
door. Provided they are polite
and kind, they’re welcome,”
she said.
According to Jaramillo,
beauty is an ongoing learning
process, and she requires her
employees to continue their
education by attending nationwide conferences
and workshops. She has been in the beauty indus
try for 22 years and has owned three other business
es in the past.
