director at Lambda and lead attorney on the
case. “Since filing this lawsuit, our clients have
welcomed new children into their families and
mourned the loss of loved ones—tragically
including the death of one of our plaintiffs, Mar
ilyn Maneely, who passed away earlier this fall.
With these life-changing events come difficult
and painful challenges our clients shouldn’t
have to face but do because they are not allowed
to marry.”

izens when the government denies them access
to one of society’s most esteemed institutions,
marriage, with the person each loves.”

A Hillsborough County Commission vote to
ban official recognition of Gay Pride events is
unconstitutional, according to a lawsuit filed
Oct. 19 by business owner and activist Joe Red-
ner. The installation of a Gay Pride display in a
public library prompted the commission vote,
but he said the ban unlawfully targets gays and
lesbians and restricts his access to information at
public libraries.
The Kansas Supreme Court overturned
Oct. 24 the sentence of Matthew R. Limon, who
was originally set to serve 17 years in prison for
engaging in sex at age 18 with a 14-year-old boy.
“Moral disapproval of a
group cannot be a legiti
mate state interest,” the

court wrote, striking down
a state law that treated
same-sex cases differently
from heterosexual ones.
