Reverend Billy, the pastor of the Church of Stop Shopping, is the creation of the New York City-based
author/actor William Talen. This project garnered notice in 1997 through sidewalk preaching in the Times
Square Disney Store. To date, hundreds of performances have taken place inside and out of transnational
stores throughout Manhattan, though Disney, the Gap and Starbucks remain favorite theaters. More
recently the Reverend has defended the Edgar Allan Poe House against the aggressions of NYU’s Law
School. Evening-length and fully interactive church services are staged in downtown New York.
His collar is fake but his
calling is real.
