ike its straight counterpart, gay bondage
photography tends to be insular. As a
record of a subculture of S/M enthusiasts,
the appeal is often limited. That’s not to say
there haven’t been breakouts. Few would
deny the power of some of Robert Map
plethorpe’s edgier images, with their blend
of shocking content and classic form.
Rick Castro isn’t quite in Mapple
thorpe’s league, but as a chronicler of the
world of late 20th century gay S/M, it’s
hard to fault him. 13 Years of Bondage col
lects some of his most intriguing black-
and-white images in this genre. What’s
most surprising, though perhaps inevitable
given how brutal American culture in
general has become, is how unshocking
this material is. Images of naked hunks
