The next Q Center Community Meeting
will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. June 6 in Room C
on the second floor of the Portland Building,
1120 S.W. Fifth Ave.
The agenda will include a general overview;
who’s doing what; roles and introductions;
what’s up with the concept and opportunity;
and issues related to leadership, money and
facility. Participants will have a chance to ask
questions and find out more about parties to
benefit the center, Pride 2005 events and a
chance to volunteer and get involved. The
Q Center also needs volunteers at Pride, so call
citizen advocate Gordon Johnson if you are

R esponds to R ecent H ate C rimes
In recent weeks, there have been an
unprecedented number of reports of discrimina
tion and hate crimes on the Southern Oregon
University campus in Ashland. There was an
apparent hate crime of intimidation and threat
that occurred off campus and then on campus in
the early morning hours of April 30.
Hateful fliers have been placed in a resi
dence hall, on an automobile and in mailboxes
and on doors of Stevenson Union offices.
These fliers are targeting a particular candidate
of student government elections. The fliers
have caused much disturbance on campus and
in the community.
President Elisabeth Zinser led a press confer
ence May 27 to address these incidents and
answer questions. State Sen. Alan Bates,
D-Ashland, attended, and Reps. Peter Buckley,
D-Ashland, and Sal Esquivel, R-Medford, deliv
ered messages through live telecast.
“The mindless hatred expressed in the fliers
is clearly unacceptable to SOU and our com
munity as a whole,” Buckley noted. “I am proud
to stand together with the students, staff, facul
ty and administration of SOU to make that
point. A threat to any of our students or a threat
to any resident of our city can be met with only
one response: zero tolerance.”
