Gay yuletide CDs
atthew Kern has a thing for Nordie’s.
It’s only natural that the gay Portland
musician would have a hit of a love affair
going on with that venerable downtown shop
ping center. For five years he has been the
house pianist at Nord
strom, where this time of
year it’s bubbling with the
sound of holiday tunes.
If you’ve wished you
could Kittle up that sound
along with the cologne and
cashmere you splurged on
for somekidy special’s
stocking, well, Kern has
done it for you. He just
released a collection of his
favorite holiday songs,
Christmas Present (available
at Nordstrom).
“Christmas songs take us
hack to childhcxxl,” says
Kern. “In putting together
this CD, 1 wanted to ckxise
songs that reflected the
whole range of emotions
that people experience dur
ing the Christmas season."
Matthew Kern has#a
He says he put the
album together last year
when he was going through a breakup.
“Undoubtedly some of the intensity of the
album comes out of that experience...‘Have
Yourself a Merry Christmas’ is perhaps the ulti
mate melancholy holiday sting, hut 1 also truly
adore Joni Mitchell’s ‘River.’ ”
The unaccompanied Paul Winter-esque
piano evokes leisurely evenings sipping cock
tails hy the fire at Heathman’s. Which is no
surprise, since Kern plays there as well!

studios into a one-day print shop, in which
artists of many disciplines will come together
to make monoprints. The artists, who arrive at

the rest home, with the expectation that they

Arensmeyer, a sculptor who works almost
entirely with found materials, told Just Out: “I
can’t paint or draw, which
makes printmaking, espe

a challenge, to say the
